Legal Aid Starting Salary $40,000

The National Association for Legal Professionals (NALP) announced today that the median entry-level pay for legal aid attorneys is $40,000. The good news - it's up $6,000 from 2004 and $4,000 from 2006 . - K

It is great that it is up, but still ridiculous that it is 25% of what the starting salary is at big law firms. No wonder there is a recruitment and retention problem in the legal aid community.

I agree that the differential is ridiculous. But LSC, law schools, and state access-to-justice communities are trying to address the recruitment and retention problems through Loan Repayment Assistance Programs (LRAPs) and the LSC Leadership Mentoring Pilot project.
